Helping people move on to a life free from abuse: meet Bart, Glow’s Move on Support Worker

Bart

At Glow, our mission is simple but powerful: to end domestic abuse. For us, that means more than providing safe refuge, it is about helping people build lasting futures free from abuse.

For many who come into our refuges in Stoke, Staffordshire Moorlands, and Newcastle, the journey begins with safety and support, but it does not end there. Once someone has had time to understand what has happened to them, process their experiences, and begin their recovery, they often face a new challenge: moving on to life outside of refuge.

That’s where Bart comes in.

Bart is Glow’s Move on Support Worker, and his role is all about supporting people to take that next step with confidence. He helps customers prepare for independent living, making sure they feel secure and supported as they transition out of refuge.

This can mean many things. Bart provides practical support such as helping people get tenancy ready, finding housing options, applying for grants, and setting up household bills. He also offers emotional support to ensure individuals feel prepared for the changes ahead and know that Glow is still by their side. Alongside this, he helps people build community connections through partnerships with local organisations and charities, so that no one feels as though they are facing this next chapter alone.

Creating safety beyond refuge
When someone arrives at refuge, the first priority is safety. Over time, with the support of Glow staff, they begin to recover and rebuild their confidence. Once they feel ready for the next step, Bart helps bridge the gap, ensuring they move forward not just to a new house, but to a safe, sustainable future.

“It’s about making sure people don’t just leave refuge,” Bart explains.

“We want them to truly move on, into a life where they feel safe, supported, and free from abuse.”

Janice’s* story
Janice came to one of our refuges with her children after experiencing domestic abuse. With Glow’s support, she found the strength to recover and think about her next chapter. That is when Bart stepped in.

He worked with Janice to secure a home in the community, liaised with the landlord to make the move possible, and then supported her with everything from bills to a personal support plan. Just as importantly, he helped make sure her children received the emotional support they needed too.

Janice told us how grateful she was for Bart’s support, describing how he made the transition less daunting and helped her family feel ready to start again.

Ending domestic abuse, together
Bart’s work is just one example of how Glow goes beyond immediate safety to provide long term support. By helping people move on with confidence, we make sure that life after refuge is not just possible but positive, safe, and free from abuse.

Because at Glow, ending domestic abuse means more than refuge. It means brighter futures.
