Meet Ben: supporting people to rebuild and move forward after domestic abuse

Ben (1)

At Glow, we know that rebuilding your life after abuse takes courage, and the right support. That’s why our team is made up of kind, caring professionals who are here to listen, understand, and help you take each step at your own pace.

One of those people is Ben, one of our Senior Domestic Abuse Practitioners, working in our refuges supporting people escaping domestic abuse. Ben joined Glow in July 2025, and since then has been helping people who live in our refuges to find safety, stability, and hope again.

“No two days are ever the same,” says Ben. “The team here is so lovely and supportive, and that’s what makes it such a special place to work. You can’t do this job if you don’t care. You have to want to make a difference.”

Ben didn’t always work in this field. He spent 18 years in retail, working closely with people and learning how to listen and help. Later, he joined NHS 111 and trained as a Health Practitioner, a role where he supported people through difficult moments in their lives.

When he was made redundant, Ben saw a job with Glow and felt drawn to it straight away.

“I wanted to do something that mattered,” he says. “This role was all about supporting people and helping them move forward. I know that what I do now makes a difference every single day. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.”

Ben understands that, as a man working in a refuge, people might not always expect to see him there.

“Sometimes I get surprised looks,” he says. “I think that’s because people don’t often see men in roles like this, especially in refuges. But it’s important to show that not all perpetrators are men.

I hope that by working here, I can help rebuild trust. It’s about showing that there are good, kind men out there who want to help. That what happened to you wasn’t your fault, and it wasn’t every man. It was the actions of one person. Seeing that difference can help people heal.”

As part of the Glow team, Ben supports both the residents and the staff in our refuge, making sure the building runs smoothly and that everyone feels safe and supported. He works alongside the scheme manager and his colleagues to make sure every person has what they need, whether that’s practical support, emotional help, or simply someone to listen.

“It’s a privilege to be part of someone’s recovery,” Ben says. “To see someone grow stronger, start to believe in themselves again, and begin to live the life they deserve, that’s what it’s all about.”
