No one left behind: Glow’s refuge services support everyone, regardless of background or status

Fatima

When Fatima and her four children arrived at Glow’s refuge, they were exhausted, frightened, and unsure what the future would hold.

They had been living in temporary accommodation after fleeing domestic abuse, but when it became clear that the alleged perpetrator knew their location, their social worker reached out to Glow for urgent safe accommodation.

Within a short time, the family were welcomed into one of our refuges, a secure and supportive environment where they could finally begin to heal.

Overcoming barriers together
Fatima arrived with very little. No bank account, limited identification, and no access to public funds. Our team immediately applied for the Domestic Violence Destitution Concession (DDVC) on her behalf, allowing her to apply for benefits and begin rebuilding financial independence.

It wasn’t easy. Without a valid ID, opening a bank account and claiming Universal Credit was a complex process. But with ongoing advocacy and support from Glow staff, Fatima was finally able to set up an online account, access her benefits, and regain a sense of control over her life.

Our team also worked closely with immigration solicitors to arrange biometric ID appointments, helping Fatima secure her right to remain in the UK. Alongside this, we supported her through challenging court proceedings and liaised with children’s services to make sure the whole family was safe, heard, and supported.

Supporting the whole family
While Fatima worked through the legal and financial challenges, her children received one-to-one emotional support through Glow’s Children and Young People’s Workers (CYPW) service. These sessions offered a safe space to talk about their experiences, build confidence, and process the trauma they had faced.

Through consistent engagement with social care, the courts, and Glow’s team, Fatima began to rebuild her life. Eventually, safe contact arrangements between the children and their father were re-established, and social services recognised the family’s progress and stability.

A new chapter
After a long period in refuge, Fatima has now been granted her right to remain in the UK, secured her benefits, and accepted an offer for a new family home.

Glow’s Move-On Support Worker continues to work alongside her, helping to furnish her new property, apply for charitable grants, and ensure she feels confident and supported as she transitions into independent living.

Fatima’s journey is one of resilience, courage, and transformation, but it’s also a reflection of what safe accommodation, specialist advocacy, and compassionate support can achieve.
