There's No Excuse for Abuse: Glow launches World Cup campaign to support survivors and encourage change

No Excuse For Abuse

For many people, football is about coming together, celebrating with loved ones and making memories. But for others, the countdown to kick-off can bring anxiety, fear and uncertainty.

Evidence suggests that domestic abuse risk can increase during major sporting events, particularly where alcohol use and existing coercive control are already present. Studies have found rises in alcohol-related domestic abuse incidents following major football matches, including after victories as well as defeats.

Football doesn't cause domestic abuse, and neither does alcohol. Abuse is always a choice.

That's why, throughout the tournament, Glow will be sharing advice, support and information for anyone affected by domestic abuse, whether you're experiencing it yourself, worried about someone you love, or concerned about your own behaviour.

Jackie Capewell, Operations Manager at Glow said: "The World Cup should be remembered for the excitement of supporting your team, not fear at home. There's no excuse for abuse, not football, not alcohol, not winning or losing."

"If you're worried about your own behaviour or recognise that your actions are hurting the people you love, support is available. Asking for help isn't a sign of weakness. Taking responsibility and making a change is one of the strongest things you can do."

"And if you're experiencing domestic abuse, please know that you're not alone. Whether you need a safe place to stay, support through court proceedings, help understanding your options or support rebuilding your confidence after abuse, we're here for you."

"Because support doesn't stop at the final whistle."

The campaign will shine a spotlight on the range of support available through Glow.

This includes safe accommodation for individuals and families experiencing domestic abuse, Glow's Recovery Hub which helps survivors recover and rebuild their lives, and specialist IDVA support to help people understand their options and navigate complex systems, including court proceedings.

The campaign will also highlight Glow's 180° Project, which supports people who recognise harmful behaviours and want to take responsibility, make positive changes and build healthier relationships.

Throughout the World Cup, Glow will use football-inspired messages to encourage people to seek help, reflect on their relationships and recognise that everyone deserves to feel safe at home.

Because whatever the result on the pitch, one thing remains true: There's No Excuse for Abuse.
