If you’re experiencing domestic abuse, or have experienced it in the past, it can feel isolating, confusing and overwhelming. You’re not alone, and more support is becoming available.
We’re pleased to share that at Glow, our Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) service is expanding across Derbyshire. We’ve recently introduced three specialist roles: an Older Persons (55+) IDVA, an LGBTQ+ IDVA and a Culturally Diverse Communities IDVA. This means more people can access tailored support that reflects their experiences and individual needs.
Domestic abuse can affect anyone, but some people face additional barriers when it comes to seeking help, being heard, or accessing support.
Across the UK, around 2.3 million adults experience domestic abuse each year. People within the LGBTQ+ community can experience abuse at similar or higher rates than heterosexual people, yet many are less likely to access support due to fear of discrimination, not being taken seriously, or being “outed”.
People from culturally diverse communities may face barriers such as language differences, immigration concerns, cultural expectations, fear of community judgement, or uncertainty around available services.
For older people, abuse is often hidden and underreported. Thousands of people aged 60 and over experience abuse each year, often from partners, adult children or family members. Isolation, health needs, or dependence on the person causing harm can make seeking support even harder.
Behind every statistic is someone who may feel trapped, uncertain, or afraid. That’s why having specialist support that understands these experiences can make a real difference.
Our LGBTQ+ IDVA helps ensure support is inclusive, accessible and free from judgement, helping survivors understand their options, navigate abuse, and access joined-up support from services including housing, health and safeguarding.
Our Culturally Diverse Communities IDVA supports people from culturally diverse backgrounds by recognising the unique challenges they may face and ensuring support is respectful, inclusive and culturally aware.
Our Older Persons IDVA works with people aged 55+ who may be experiencing abuse in complex or hidden circumstances, helping them access support that reflects their individual situation and needs.
Did you know our IDVA service already provides a wide range of specialist support across Derbyshire? Alongside these new roles, the team also includes:
- A Court IDVA supporting survivors through the criminal justice system
- A Family Welfare IDVA supporting people through family court proceedings
- A Stalking and Harassment Lead IDVA with specialist knowledge of stalking and coercive control
- A Health IDVA working closely with hospital teams across Derbyshire
Together, the team works across safeguarding, housing, healthcare, policing and community services to help people access the support they need.
As our service continues to grow, we’re looking for people who are passionate about supporting others and making a difference. Whether you already have experience working with people or bring empathy, understanding and a strong desire to help, your contribution could be life-changing.
Being an IDVA means supporting someone through one of the most difficult times in their life, helping them find safety, understand their options, and move forward.
If you need support, you don’t have to go through this alone. Find out more about our service at www.findtheglow.org.uk/IDVA
