What is domestic abuse?

When it comes to understanding whether or not you or someone you love is in an abusive relationship, always trust your gut.

Domestic abuse is when one person hurts, bullies or controls another person who they in a relationship with, used to be in a relationship with, or is in the same family. It can happen once or over a long time.

If you are a young person who has seen or heard domestic abuse, you can be affected by it. It might make you feel scared, lonely and unsure of what to do. You might even wonder if it’s your fault. It’s not! You are not alone. There are other young people who have experienced the same as you and there are lots of people who can and will help.

What can you do?

The first step is to tell someone you trust about what is happening. If you’re not able to talk to the person who is being abused, you could try and talk to someone else in your family, a teacher or anyone else you feel comfortable speaking to.

What if people are fighting?

If there’s violence when you are there, it’s important that you stay safe when it happens. Sometimes you might feel like you should try and protect the person who’s being hurt. This can be very risky and you could get hurt yourself.

If you are scared when there is a fight, you call 999 any time of the day or night and ask for the police.
